Sunda New Asian Chicago Review: A Fulton Market Date Night

Written by

My boyfriend and I love a good date night, and on my most recent trip to Chicago we decided to try Sunda New Asian in Fulton Market. I can confidently say it was one of the best date nights we’ve ever had. Definitely top five. From the food to the drinks to the vibe of the restaurant, everything was incredible. If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Fulton Market for a romantic night out, Sunda should be at the top of your list.

First Impressions

Walking into Sunda New Asian, the restaurant immediately felt sleek and sexy. The lighting, the music, and the overall energy of the space set the perfect tone for a date night. The bar inside is gorgeous, and the drink menu is full of unique cocktails and sake options that make it easy to splurge and really enjoy the night. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but when you’re looking for a night that feels special and memorable, it’s worth every penny.

What We Ordered

We went all out with this meal and tried a little bit of everything. Here’s a full breakdown of what we ordered and what we thought:

Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice

This is one of those dishes I have to order anywhere it’s on the menu, and Sunda’s version did not disappoint. The tuna was finely chopped and super easy to eat. The rice had a great crisp to it, although it was a little hard to cut in half if you wanted to share. Our server actually told us to skip the wagyu crispy rice, explaining that the rare beef on rice just doesn’t work as well. We trusted him and stuck with the spicy tuna, and he was right.

Korean Fried Chicken Steamed Buns

These were my boyfriend’s favorite of the night. The buns were pillowy soft, the chicken had the perfect crunch, and the flavor had just the right amount of tang without being overly spicy. You get four buns, which makes this a great dish to share, but also filling — so plan your order around them.

Yellowtail Jalapeño

I’ll admit I’m not a big jalapeño fan, so I ate just the yellowtail, but I was still wowed. The fish was high quality, buttery soft, and not fishy at all. It came with five thin slices in a sauce that tasted like a lemon-soy blend. It was bright, citrusy, and balanced perfectly with the fish.

Oxtail Potstickers

If you love braised beef, this dish is a must-order. Don’t let the word “oxtail” scare you. The meat has the same flavor and texture as short rib, and it was so tender. Each potsticker had just the right amount of filling, and the sauce jam served with it added a depth of flavor that made them absolutely delicious.

Szechuan Chicken

This dish only comes in one size and is definitely made to share. The chicken was flavorful, served over crispy rice noodles that were just as fun to snack on. We were pretty full at this point, so we only had a couple of bites, but it was still a great dish to round out the meal.

The Star of the Show: The Ridiculous

The highlight of the entire night was dessert, a dish called The Ridiculous — and the name couldn’t be more accurate. It’s essentially carrot cake ice cream, but so much more than that. Imagine a ball of vanilla ice cream wrapped in a layer of carrot cake, dipped in caramel, and rolled in candied pecans. This dessert blew us away. It was hands-down the best dessert I’ve ever had. I literally called my mom after dinner to tell her I need this at my wedding one day, and I’m not even engaged. It was that good. If you go to Sunda, do not skip this.

Drinks

We ordered a bottle of sake to share with dinner, which paired perfectly with all the dishes. Later, we each got a lychee martini, and it was a 10 out of 10. The drink menu at Sunda is just as impressive as the food, with a wide range of cocktails and an extensive sake list.

Final Thoughts

Sunda New Asian in Fulton Market is one of the best Chicago restaurants I’ve been to for date night. The food was top quality, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the cocktails and sake list made it even better. It’s definitely a place to splurge, but when you want a night that feels truly special, it’s worth it.

If you’re planning a Chicago date night, put Sunda at the top of your list. From the spicy tuna crispy rice to the unforgettable dessert, everything we had was memorable. I’m already planning my next visit, and I know The Ridiculous will be the first thing I order.
