Straightener curls are my signature hairstyle, and one of the questions I get asked all the time is: How do you keep them looking good the next day? The truth is, preserving your curls overnight is just as important as how you style them in the first place.
That’s where the pineapple method comes in. This simple technique keeps curls from flattening, frizzing, or losing their shape while you sleep. It’s quick, easy, and has completely changed how long my curls last.
If you’ve ever woken up to a tangled mess or flat sections in the back of your hair, this method is going to be a game-changer for you.
What is the Pineapple Method?
The pineapple method is a way of putting your hair into a specialized bun at the crown of your head before bed. The name comes from how your curls stick up and out, resembling the top of a pineapple. By securing your hair loosely on top of your head, you avoid crushing your curls against the pillow while you sleep.
Step-by-Step: How I Do the Pineapple Method
- Gather Hair at the Crown
- Flip your head forward and gather your curls into a high position at the very top of your head.
- Secure in a Bun
- Twist your curls into a loose, specialized bun and secure gently with a scrunchie or coil hair tie. Avoid tight elastics, which can cause creases or breakage.
- Optional Frizz Protection
- If you struggle with frizz, try sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase or wrapping your hair in a silk scarf. This step isn’t always necessary, but it can make a difference if frizz is a problem for you.
- Morning Refresh
- Take out the bun and let your curls fall naturally. I don’t use additional heat in the morning. Instead, I use dry shampoo at the roots if needed and apply Lolavie Lightweight Hair Oil to the ends to bring my curls back to life.
Products I Use for the Pineapple Method
- Soft scrunchies or coil hair ties
- Dry shampoo for roots
- Lolavie Lightweight Hair Oil for ends
- Optional: Silk pillowcase or scarf for frizz-prone hair
Why This Works
When your curls are lifted into a specialized bun at the crown of your head, they aren’t pressed against your pillow while you sleep. That means less flattening, less frizz, and curls that actually look good the next day. This method is especially great for straightener curls, because it helps maintain that loose, effortless wave without them dropping out overnight.
Troubleshooting
- Curls still falling? Use smaller sections when curling to begin with, and make sure your straightener is fully heated.
- Frizz in the morning? Add a silk pillowcase or scarf if you’re prone to frizz.
- Creases from the tie? Use an extra-soft scrunchie and secure your bun loosely.
